Jerry Douglas is perhaps the hottest dobro player on the planet (his “day job” is backing Alison Krauss). Mandolin virtuoso Sam Bush has mile-a-minute, fancy fretwork. And phenomenal double bassist Edgar Meyer is equally at home playing with Yo Yo Ma as with a bluegrass band. Here all three are performing genre-crossing original works, traditional tunes, and some of their best-known pieces in this evening of strumming and pickin’ “newgrass” style. The New York Times calls the trio “downhome (but) after more than good-timey grins and thrills.”

From the award-winning director of Nobody Knows and Afterlife, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s poignant drama about a family haunted by the memory of a lost son is being hailed as a contemporary masterpiece. Lushly photographed, the film’s quiet pleasure takes place over the course of a beautiful afternoon in which the uniquely dysfunctional group reunites to commemorate the loss. Humor and warmth reveal the complex dynamics, petty squabbles and fleeting pleasures of life and an ultimately loving family. In Japanese with English subtitles. (Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2008, 114 min.)

This exhibition will feature performance-based video works that explore the notion of the absurd. Based loosely on non sequitur Dadaist techniques and surrealist-inspired writings, this exhibition explores absurdity in its many meanings. In many instances, these artists employ theatrical techniques by utilizing crudely-made props, costumes, and flimsy sets. By engaging dark and oftentimes ironic humor in absurd or impossible scenarios, these artists expose the underlying brutality, dehumanization, fears and taboos of American society.
