History Buff

Have a fascination for history? Make sure to check out this itinerary to explore the the best of Santa Barbara...from the Red Tile Walking Tour, to the quaint town of Solvang. This is sure to whet your appetite for more!

  • Get the lay of the land-as it was centuries ago. Take a walking tour of Santa Barbara's historic buildings, hidden courtyards and adobe homes. Info: Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, 229 E. Victoria St., 805.965.6307. Or go for the self guided Red Tile Walking Tour. For a preview, go to the special podcast "Beyond the Rooftops: Santa Barbara's Red Tile Walking Tour."

  • Lunch at Cold Spring Tavern, an Old West stagecoach stop with log-cabin bar, ghost town remnants, 1870s jail and bunkhouse. Info: 5995 Stagecoach Road, 805.967.0066.

  • Enjoy a taste of Denmark. Velkommen to Solvang, a Danish-settled town where you'll find everything from windmills to wooden shoes and lots of Danish pastries. Get your bearings at Elverhoj Museum of History housed in a building resembling a traditional 18th-century Danish farmhouse with hand painted panels, ornamental wrought iron, and carved redwood entry. Info: 1624 Elverhoy Way, 805.686.1211.

  • Want a little heavy reading? Santa Barbara Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum displays a rotating collection of thousands of historic documents, including an original stone copy of the Declaration of Independence. Info: 21 W. Anapamu St., 805.962.5322.

  • Have dinner at El Paseo Mexican Restaurant in the circa-1924 El Paseo courtyard (adjacent to Casa de la Guerra), with wroughtiron balconies, narrow passageways, gurgling fountains, whitewashed walls and arched doorways. Info: 10 El Paseo, 805.962.6050.
