Livin’ La Vida Locavore
Whether you're a food connoisseur, or you're just looking to taste our local treasures, this itinerary will help you navigate through Santa Barbara's bountiful culinary landscape. Not only will you learn how to eat like a locavore, you will also gain valuable insight on Santa Barbara's sustainable "foodie" landscape and our agricultural roots. You can fit all of the tasty attractions into a day, or take your time to delve deeper into Santa Barbara's cuisine scene by spreading your culinary jaunt over two or even three days.
- Start your morning off right with fresh-from-the-oven scones at Jeannine's American Bakery, a cheerful and bustling local fave with three locations. Or, try a delectable chocolate croissant at Renaud's Patisserie & Bistro, one of the best bakeries in town with uptown and downtown locations.
- Take an educational tour of Fairview Gardens Farm, one of Southern California's oldest organic farms, now preserved as an agricultural easement. The farm stand is open seven days a week so you can pick up some fruit to-go.
- Head to the sea for a stroll along the Santa Barbara Harbor, where you can watch the local fishermen unload their catch of the day. Make sure to follow the "Fish Walk" to learn about our sustainable fishing industry and regional specialties like sea urchin and Santa Barbara Spot Prawns.
- Hop on the Lil' Toot water taxi to Stearns Wharf, where you can sample fresh seafood dishes while taking in the stunning mountain and ocean views at Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
- If you have a couple of free days to enjoy Santa Barbara, take time to hone your culinary skills with Pascale Beale-Groom, owner of Montecito Country Kitchen, who offers weekday lunchtime classes using local farmers' market produce to create enticing Mediterranean menus. Or, book a Market Forays experience, which includes tours of local farmers' and fishermen's markets and specialty food shops, followed by a hands-on cooking class. The experience concludes with a shared feast centered around the fresh ingredients gathered on your shopping excursion-paired to local wines, of course.
- Slide on your walking shoes and hit the streets of downtown Santa Barbara to embark on the Urban Wine Trail, home to Santa Barbara Winery, Oreana Winery and Jaffurs Wine Cellars, to name just a few.
- If you prefer hops to grapes, downtown Santa Barbara has plenty on tap. Visit the Telegraph Brewing Company tasting room or stroll down the street to Santa Barbara Brewing Company and sample their State Street Stout, a dark-as-night variety with mellow, creamy favors.
- Conclude your day with a meal at one of our many farm-to-fork restaurants.
